Whatcom County Prosecuting Attorney, Eric Richey

Reduce Incarceration and Increase Community Safety in Whatcom County

We, the undersigned residents of Whatcom County, are concerned about the overuse of incarceration for nonviolent misdemeanors. Research shows that prosecuting these offenses often does more harm than good, leading to: Increased recidivism: People who are prosecuted for nonviolent misdemeanors are more likely to become involved in the criminal legal system again.

Racial disparities: People of color are disproportionately impacted by the prosecution of non violent misdemeanors. Wasted resources: Prosecuting nonvalent misdemeanors diverts resources from more effective approaches to public safety. We urge Prosecutor Richey to adopt the following reforms:

  •  Decline to prosecute non violent misdemeanors driven by poverty, mental health, substance use, or social issues.
  •  Invest in community-based alternatives to incarceration that address the root causes of crime.
  • Publicly commit to reducing Whatcom County's reliance on incarceration.

By taking these steps, we can create a safer, more just, and more equitable community for all.
